LAWRENCE — Former Kansas Gov. Mark Parkinson and his wife, Stacy, remember well the benefits of working as law clerks in the nation’s capital the summer after their second year of law school. As KU Law launches its 6th Semester in D.C. program, the Parkinsons have created a fund to support Jayhawk lawyers following in their footsteps.

“Stacy and I have lived the American Dream,” said Mark Parkinson, L’84. “A large part our success is due to our connection with the KU law school. It gave us tremendous opportunities. Now we want to give the current generation of law students and future generations the same opportunities that we had.”

The Mark V. & Stacy A. Parkinson Student Support Fund will provide stipends to participants in the 6th Semester in D.C. program, which allows students to work in D.C. as externs with agencies, nonprofits or other qualifying public interest organizations during their final semester of law school. The Parkinsons established the fund with a $125,000 gift. Robin Randolph is the first recipient.

The Parkinsons both graduated from KU Law in 1984. Mark Parkinson is president and CEO of the American Health Care Association in Washington, D.C. Before leading AHCA, he was a successful businessman, state legislator, and most recently served as the 45th governor of Kansas. Stacy Parkinson has been a practicing attorney in both the public and private sectors, and a businesswoman focused on assisted living and nursing facilities.
