Hello! My name is Jake Turner, and I’m a 3L from Mission, Kansas. I graduated from the University of Tulsa (Oklahoma) with a bachelor’s of science in sociology and economics.

I took three years off before law school. The first year I spent teaching English on a Fulbright grant in Bulgaria. I taught in the small city of Sliven, which lies between the mountains and the Black Sea. In addition to teaching, I coached an English-speaking debate team and had the opportunity to travel around Europe. After a year abroad, I returned to Kansas City and taught high school math for two years at Hogan Preparatory Academy through Teach for America.

When I was deciding which law school to attend, I knew I wanted to stay in the Midwest and eventually work in the Kansas City metro area. I applied to schools in the states surrounding Kansas. I quickly concluded that KU would be the best option for me because of the school’s strong alumni base and connections in KC. I also knew that a KU Law degree would travel well if I needed to move to a different city.

I fell in love with the culture at KU Law. While I was visiting, my ambassador made me feel connected with the professors and the students at the school. This was a driving force that led me to KU Law and is still one of my favorite things about the school.

I know deciding on a law school is a difficult decision with a wide variety of considerations and options. I recommend that you come and visit KU. The campus is absolutely beautiful, and Lawrence is a great town. Come ask questions of faculty, staff and students, and you will see what makes KU Law unique and the perfect next step in your career! Rock Chalk!
